Youth Volunteer

Hello! My name is Bridget, and I recently completed an international internship with Sculpt. I am
currently a Human Development & Family Studies and Psychology student at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. My time at Sculpt was incredibly beneficial to my studies, and I learned
skills that I will be able to take with me into the future.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, I worked in a hybrid model. When I first went into the office, I
immediately felt welcomed and like a true part of the team. By the time I left my first day, I was
already looking forward to the next time I would be going in. I was able to meet several staff
members and learn about their specific career paths. I learned about so many different ways to
be involved in the non-profit sector. Finance, project management, leadership, and marketing
are a few examples of different careers I learned about in my placement. Everyone I met was
passionate about the work they were doing, and it was clear that they were working diligently to
make the world a better place.
Even when I was working online, I still felt connected to the team. One of the main projects that I
worked on was called “Queer Migrants,” and I was given the opportunity to help design the
training module. One of the main things I wanted to accomplish in my placement was working
on graphic design, and I was really able to develop my creative side over the past few weeks. I
was able to design videos, infographics, and help create the overall layout of the training. I have
never had significant exposure to graphic design before, but it is a field that will be important in
my future studies. Maija and Sophia (my wonderful supervisors) made sure to help me develop
skills that I can use later on. They always made sure that I was working on things that I was
interested in, and they made it clear to me that they truly cared about me enjoying my
experience.
One of the main things that I enjoyed about working for Sculpt was that I was able to see
directly how my work was helping the organization carry out its mission. The training modules
Sculpt delivers are given to professionals, young people, and community members, helping to
create a more inclusive world. The module I worked on helps make sure that all people are able
to thrive in an inclusive working environment, and I was able to see the direct path from my work
to the receiver. I felt proud of the work I did for Sculpt, and I felt proud to be a part of an
organization that cares so deeply. I will forever be grateful for my time here, and I cannot
recommend an internship with them enough!
